BEIJING, Sept. 7 — Good communication between doctors and patients is vital - and Shanghai Health Bureau yesterday issued a guide book teaching medical staff how to talk better with patients.    China’s first such book contains 91 stories written by doctors and nurses from Tongji Hospital, based on their own experiences and practice.

It is divided into four parts covering out-patient and emergency treatment, hospitalization, surgery and leaving the hospital, covering all aspects of the medical process and giving solutions and suggestions to various complaints by patients.

”The book encourages doctors and nurses to enhance communication with patients and teaches them skills and methods. All these stories remind medical staff to think in the shoes of patients,” said Song Guofan, an official with Shanghai Health Bureau.

”Giving patients concrete explanation on their diseases without using medical jargon, and perfecting the complaints system are all effective to streamline the medical process and enhance trust between the hospital and the public.”
