KATHMANDU, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) — Two persons have died of dysentery in southern Nepali district Rautahat on Wednesday, local newspaper The Himalayan Times reported on Thursday. For two months, the disease has gripped large areas of Rautahat district, around 110 km south of capital Kathmandu.
Jiyalal Yadav, 25, of Maryadpur village and Nikhat Khatun, 2, of Tejapakad village died of the disease, said Village Development Committee (VDC) secretary Shiv Shankar Barma.
Twenty-two others in the VDC are suffering from dysentery, said Barma. They are being treated at the local health post.
Chief of the district health post Ram Shanker Thakur said over 16 persons have died of dysentery in a course of two months.
Also in southern Nepal, Saptari district, some 190 km southeast of capital Kathmandu, the number of those dying of dysentery has crossed 19. Dysentery is raging in 50 VDCs in this district, and more than 50,000 persons are affected, said the Saptari District Public Health Office (DPHO). The DPHO has cautioned people to drink boiled water only.
The report said cholera has also broken out in the wake of the months-long flood in Saptari district. Senior official at the DPHORakesh Thakur said samples showed cholera germs.
