Go Green with Cloth
By Genesis Davies

While plastic or paper tablecloths and paper napkins are more convenient, you can’t recycle them once they are soiled. Instead, consider going with real fabric.

Cloth napkins absorb just as well as paper ones and are far more elegant, as are cloth tablecloths. Using a heavier fabric adds an extra touch of class to any wedding reception and your guests will be impressed.

There are three ways to go with this, rent, buy, or make your own. Since you will probably have no need for 150 cloth napkins in the near future (after the wedding reception of course) you can eliminate the buying factor, which tends to be rather expensive.

Making your own cloth napkins and tablecloths is time consuming, but if you want a truly unique look, it is the way to go. You can buy fabric that matches your wedding theme (starfish and shells on a sandy background for a beach wedding, for example) and then sew it up or hire someone to sew it for you.

Once you are finished with your homemade cloth napkins, you can sell them on eBay or give them away as mementos (once they are washed) to your bridesmaids. However, you may still end up having a huge pile of themed tablecloths!

The third option is to rent. This works well if you have no desire to wash everything yourself after the wedding reception and don’t want to buy. However, your choices will be somewhat limited. You may end up with only solid colors to choose from, which is fine if that is what you wanted in the first place! Check out your local party rental for options.

Cloth is a far more environmentally friendly choice than paper or plastic. If you really want a green wedding, this is the way to go.
