List of Symptoms of Menopause
By Vanessa Evans
The menopause is the time in a women’s life when she stops her menstrual periods. In the run up to this time, there is a change in the levels of hormones that are being produced and this can have an effect on both an emotional and physical level. In some women it can produce severe symptoms although others barely notice it. Here is a list of symptoms of menopause that are commonly seen in women.
Hot flashes - these are periods when the body becomes very hot as the blood vessels close to the skin dilate. A red ‘flush’ is sometimes seen most commonly around the face, neck and shoulders.
Night sweats - these are related to hot flushes and occur at night. Some women find that they wake up drenched in sweat. This can result in sleep disturbance for the sufferer and their spouse.
Mood changes - Not surprisingly hormonal changes can have a major effect on mood. Some women feel more irritable and others more prone to aggression. For others bursting into tears due to minor events occurs on a regular basis.
Anxiety - many women say that they feel more anxious about things at this time. They worry more about what may happen in the future and just feel more ’stressed out’.
Osteoporosis - Women that have gone through the menopause are more prone to osteoporosis. This is a condition where the bones are more brittle and can fracture. The hip and spine are often affected by this condition.
Vaginal dryness - This is commonly accompanied by a lack of elasticity in the vaginal wall. This can cause discomfort during intercourse.
Irregular periods - the timing of periods can be quite erratic before they actually stop. Most doctors will say that you have actually reached the menopause when you have gone for 12 months without a period.
Hair loss - Some women find that their hair is either much thinner or they actually lose some hair.
Facial hair - hair may also grow in less desirable areas. This can be across the top lip and around the chin. This may be particularly noticeable if you have dark hair.
Lethargy - a feeling of general tiredness with no ‘get up and go’. This is sometimes related to having disturbed sleep due to physical symptoms associated with the menopause.
Dry and thin skin - the texture and feel of the skin changes in many women. Some women find they need to start using moisturizers.
