Do I Have to Quit Smoking Before My Breast Augmentation Procedure?
By Dr. Jim Greene
Although it is suggested that you quit smoking prior to undergoing a breast augmentation procedure it is not required. There are many valid reasons why one should quit smoking before having the procedure done which includes the fact that smoking has been attributed to compromise the recovery process.
Besides quitting for your own health and to allow for a longer healthier life, quitting smoking can help your recover process. Some people who smoke may have a cough while some may not it all depends on the length of time that the patient has been smoking. In the event that one coughs then a complication may arise simply from the action of the cough. Just like all breast augmentation patients are required to wear a special bra to prevent ripping or tearing cause by the implants moving around, the act of coughing can do the same thing even if you are wearing the special bra. Let’s say that you decided to have the implant placed completely under the pectoral muscles. If you then develop a cough because of the smoking then you can risk the chance of ripping the pectoral muscles free of the sternum. This is a dangerous complication due to the degree of difficulty associated with reattaching the muscle groups to the sternum.
Smoking or actually the nicotine that comes from the cigarette causes the body’s immune system to work slower. It has been shown in many studies that a breast augmentation patient can expect anywhere from a 10% to a 50% longer recovery period. Anyone who is undergoing a breast augmentation knows that they want to be able to return to their daily activities as soon as possible, but smoking can mean extra days before you can go on with your life.
It is also important to speak to your surgeon prior to the breast augmentation procedure as he or she will have more information regarding the effect of smoking in comparison to the recovering breast augmentation patient. If you are unable to quit smoking completely it is still advisable to cut back on the amount of cigarettes that you smoke prior to undergoing the breast augmentation procedure.
